A former unused barracks. A refurbished prison. These are Metelkova and hostel Celica, not far from the old town of Ljubljana. A young and open-minded place, where people can come and go, have fun in clubs, chat to each other. Sculptors and painters work in their ateliers that you can discover entering the buildings. Alkatraz gallery is the centre of this movement and supports by its presence who works here. In contrast with the former role of this place, hidden from common people during Tito's Yugoslavia. Now Metelkova welcomes anyone who enter here.
For people coming from abroad, hostel Celica, meaning prison, is the most interesting place. Saved from breaking up and restructured by an architect and his artists friends. It's possible to sleep in the former cells on the first floor, each one different from the others. More than eighty, between sculptors, painters, architects, are still working at this project.
Metelkova area is art-soaked, you can notice it in the stone, iron, wooden sculptures which live in the courtyard. The walls hadn't escaped this creative moment. Each square centimetre is painted. Faces, gnomes, fantastic beings live in this two-dimensional world. And give life to matter.
