Far away from home
This project is all about the migrants in China who work far away from home, in low-paid jobs in hard working environments. Most of them also have a low level of education and many come from the countryside in search of a better life. In the end, they lose their sense of place and start to question where exactly should they be. When all hands are washed, people want the same things and the people in my pictures work so very hard to earn enough so that their children can study. They don’t want the next generation to suffer from a lack of options and opportunities.
Sisi Xiong was born in the Sichuan province in China. She has been living and working out of the UK for 10 years. Her work explores the changing face of contemporary China through a western perspective. She has traveled the world extensively, and religion features heavily in her work, although her work is always about people. She has previously undertaken projects involving female Afghan students in Iran, Nepalese funeral rituals and Tibetan monastic life.
